SRHS Principal Steps Down
Principal Judy Colton announced to her staff this past week that she will not be returning to SRHS as principal for the 2010-11 school year. Outlined below are excerpts from Judy's written letter that was distributed to the SRHS school community.
"It is with a heavy heart that I am stepping down as Principal of San Rafael High School. This is a job that I love, but after eleven years, I have decided that it is time for me to make a transition. My decision to reduce my work load is based on my desire to spend more time with my family. In mid-July, I am going to be blessed with my first grandchild. Also, my dear Mother has Alzheimer's disease, and in her waning years I want to spend as much time with her as possible. My success as Principal has always been due to the support of superlative teachers and staff, as well the great parental and community support I have been privileged to receive during my tenure as Principal. Moving forward, my new position as Special Projects Director at the District office, allows me a more flexible and a 50% work schedule. My new role will allow me to remain involved with the San Rafael City Schools."
Judy's contributions to San Rafael High School are tremendous. She has repeatedly demonstrated her ability to bring people together working towards a common goal. Students, staff, parents, and the entire San Rafael community have all been the beneficiaries of Judy's efforts.
Robert Lester Thomas, long time SRHS teacher
Bob (as he was known to most) was born in Fresno, California, grew up in Stockton, and passed away on June 2, 2010 in Marin. He was the son of David and Bertha, both of Kentucky, and the brother of David Jr., who died in 2004. Bob attended Stockton High School, where he was a star basketball player. In 1944, he shipped out with the U.S. Navy to the South Pacific, where he was stationed on Manus Island (in the Admiralty Islands) as a radio operator. After WWII he returned to Stockton to attend College of the Pacific, earning a BA in English and Speech, a Master's degree in English, and a teaching credential. He was brilliant in theatrical arts and a member of the COP basketball team. Although acting was a great passion, teaching was Bob's chosen career. He began in Folsom and then Stockton, where he taught at many levels, including Stockton College. From 1958 to 1989, Bob taught speech and English at San Rafael High School, but it was his work as an English teacher that set the solid foundation for his remarkable reputation. At every grade and ability level, Bob was a master of his craft. But it was at the senior level that Bob excelled. Whether it was Advanced Placement, senior honors, or senior college preparatory, Bob was the ideal teacher -- well prepared, demanding, challenging, and highly respected. Over the years, so many of his former students kept in touch -- a clear indication of his profound influence upon them. During all this time, Bob also served as a mentor for his colleagues, who recognized his commitment to his teaching and his classroom ability. Bob enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad. He also appreciated the arts, especially the theatre. Bob was known for his generosity, sharp wit, compassion, creativity, strength, grace, and intellect. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, Wilma, his two daughters, Carolyn and Leslie, his two nephews, and many relatives in Kentucky. Friends are invited to visit at Keaton's Mortuary in San Rafael, on Tuesday, June 8, and Wednesday, June 9, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. If you feel moved to honor his memory, please donate to a charity of your choice. An event celebrating his life is being planned. "Love is most nearly itself when here and now cease to matter." T.S. A note from SRHS's Emily Busch:
It is my pleasure to inform you of a book well worth reading. The name of the book is Either You're In or You're In the Way written by Logan & Noah Miller (born and raised in Fairfax). It is the touching story of identical twin brothers accomplishing the impossible--making a feature film with a notable cast and crew (who have been honored with 11 Academy Awards and 26 nominations) no money, no experience and no contacts. Truly inspirational!!!!!!
"The book, Either You're In or You're In the Way, moved me on so many levels. It is not only an entertaining ride into the seemingly untouchable world of making movies but it is also a poignant example of how discipline and motivation, learned through sports and hardship, can prepare you for amazing success." -Jill Kamler SRHS Parent
The book is funny, sad, heartwarming and implausible. The web site www.inornintheway.com will give you the tools to order your copy as well as lots of information about the book and authors. People who ordered this book on line before April 28th and made a copy of their receipt got a free pass for two to the SF Giant's AT&T Park on June 6th for the BOOKSTOCK celebration - a big party - music, food, beverages and the showing of Logan & Noah's movie TOUCHING HOME staring Ed Harris. In addition those who pre-ordered the book by APRIL 15th from Book Passage SAN RAFAEL HIGH SCHOOL received $5.40 for each copy sold.
